A Non-governmental Organisation, Advocacy for Advancement of Peace and Harmony in Africa Initiative (ADAPHAI) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to be magnanimous in victory.

HRL NEWS reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Wednesday morning declared Muhammadu Buhari of All Progressives Congress, APC, the winner of Presidential poll of last-minute Saturday, with a total vote of 15.1m, winning in 19 states of the federation.

Buhari defeated his closest challenger, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who polled total votes of 11, 068,323m to come second in the keenly contested exercise.

ADAPHAI, in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Sulaimon Subaru, and sent to Daily Post on Wednesday described the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections as a signal of democratic maturity in Nigeria.

It added that against all odds, the exercise was relatively peaceful and “arguably reflected the will of the people”.

The group further called on the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to do everything possible to deepen democracy through strong institutions of impeccable values.

ADAPHAI also implored President Muhammadu Buhari to strictly adhere to democratic principles and norms and be responsive to constructive criticism.

” We are indeed satisfied with the conduct of the election, despite the intensity of political tension in the build-up to the contest, the exercise was relatively peaceful.

“It is, however, instructive for President Muhammadu Buhari to be magnanimous in victory and govern the country according to relevant democratic ideals and principles.

“He must build more virile institutions that tend to sustain and advance democracy as a form of government with conscious efforts to turn the lives of majority of Nigerians around “, the statement said.
