Just In: Tambuwal Threatens To Sue INEC

The Sokoto State Governor, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has threatened to take the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to court following the declaration of Saturday’s gubernatorial election in the state as inconclusive by the commission.
Speaking in a press briefing at the Government House in Sokoto on Monday, Tambuwal urged the commission to, as a matter of urgency, declare the winner of the governorship election.

The governor said that according to section 179 subsection 2 of the Nigeria constitution as amended, he has met all the conditions to be returned elected.
“If you look at the decision of INEC, no cogent reason was given. They only relied on technical grounds.
“This is the mandate the people of Sokoto freely gave us based on the confidence and trust they had in our government,” he said.

Tambuwal said the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Yakubu Mahmoud, has a name and reputation to protect and should not allow himself to be used by external forces to truncate Nigeria’s nascent democracy.
“Look at the trend in Nigeria, inconclusive from Adamawa, Bauchi, Plateau, to Sokoto,” he said.

He used the opportunity in thanking the Sokoto people for giving him their mandate, which he attributed to trust and confidence reposed in his government.
Tambuwal said when he assumed office in 2015, he promised to tackle the issue of street boys in making Sokoto violence free, a promise, which he said he had kept, which made the election violence-free.
He further said if the rerun is conducted at any day he was optimistic of winning the election
