Napoleon descendant gets back £1m diamond ring

A diamond ring worth £1m has been returned to Prince Jean-Christophe Napoleon, a descendant of Napoleon Bonaparte, following its theft in Paris.

The ring is a family heirloom set with a 40-carat diamond taken from the crown of France's last empress Eugenie, who was wife of Napoleon III.

Jean-Christophe, 32, gave the jewellery to German-born Countess Olympia von Arco-Zinneberg as an engagement ring, Le Parisien reports.

The couple had parked outside the five-star Aubusson Hotel in Paris's plush 6th arrondissement when the item was stolen on Monday 1 April.

When the pair returned to their unlocked Mercedes GL they realised Countess von Arco-Zinneberg's bag had been taken from one of the seats.

They asked the hotel to check CCTV but none of their cameras were directed at the vehicle.
After contacting police, the countess realised a bank transaction was made at a sushi restaurant using one of her stolen cards.

Another bank transaction worth €342 (£294) was made at a nearby hotel.
Police obtained an image from the hotel's CCTV and arrested the thief at his home on Saturday.

A police source told French media that the suspect is a 30-year-old Egyptian already known for theft.
A Paris prosecutor told The Daily Telegraph: "An individual was placed in custody of the chiefs of flight, swindle and attempted fraud, and the jewel found.
"The investigators did a wonderful job. It was a real race against the clock because the thief could get rid of the jewel at any time."

Sky News has contacted French police for details about the case.
Jean Christophe, a direct descendant of Napoleon III, works as an investment banker in London.

Countess von Arco-Zinneberg is the daughter of Count Riprand of Arco-Zinneburg and Archduchess Maria Beatrice of Austria-Este.

Napoleon III was France's last monarch and the presumed son of Napoleon Bonaparte's younger brother.

Jean-Christophe is therefore a great-great-great-great nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte himself.
