Tension in APC as El-Rufai Names Party Members President Buhari Must Punish

Kaduna state Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has called on president Muhammadu Buhari to caution some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, many of which he has tagged over ambitious. He said this while blaming  the internal crisis in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the build-up to the 2019 general elections, on the desperation of some members who are positioning themselves ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

El-Rufai made this claim while speaking during an interactive session with members of The Bridge Club in Ikoyi, Lagos.
The Governor regretted that the APC lost some states to the opposition, because of the inordinate ambition of some of its members.
He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take action against them.
“There were a lot of internal crises in the APC; those crises had nothing to do with the 2019 elections; they were all about positioning for 2023.
“You know politicians can be very strategic; as illiterate as some of them can be, they are very strategic, they can think far ahead of you.
“So, those 2023 aspirations had been busy at work, creating pockets of support that had unintended consequences. I can mention a few states that we lost because of these kinds of aspirations. Some of the things led to unintended consequences and we paid for it.
“It is my view that President Muhammadu Buhari must be firm and decisive in dealing with these overambitious elements that will make his second term difficult from day one unless curtailed. The President has to be very decisive in dealing with such people,” El-Rufai said.
This comes even as El-Rufai, on Saturday said he knows how to end godfatherism in Lagos State.
Mr El-Rufai said this at an event organised by the Bridge Club in Ikoyi, Lagos State.
Details of the event were reported by Punch newspaper. The event was tagged, “An evening with His Excellency Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State.”
Mr El-Rufai said he was able to retire, in the last general elections, some political godfathers that determined the affairs of Kaduna State.
He added that many of the godfathers are merely either on paper or in the mind of people in politics.
“Godfatherism. This is Lagos. Let me tell you something sir; you know, Kaduna State used to be like that. There were three or four politicians in Kaduna that you could not become anything unless you had them on your side,” Mr El-Rufai said.
