The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders has condemned the murder of
one Mr. Chimaobi Uzuokwa Nwogu, who was allegedly killed in front of his
father’s compound in Amanze Umuokereke in Obingwa Local Government Area
of Abia State by a soldier attached to a military checkpoint at Afo Di
Mkpa Ohanze and Ukpakiri for refusing to pay N100 bribe.
The group described the killing of the young man who is married with children as “barbaric and wicked”.
They, therefore, called for the “immediate arrest and prosecution of the murderous soldier that killed the young man.
The group said, “We demand an open prosecution of the culprit. There
should be no secret prosecution where they culprit will be set free”.
According to the President General of COSEYL, Chief Goodluck Egwu
Ibem, “We demand immediate removal of all military and police
checkpoints in the entire South East geo-political zone. The checkpoints
that were meant to be security checkpoints have been turned to
extortion points by the soldiers and policemen.
“They harass road users and kill at will those who refuse to pay.
They boast and say nothing will happen if they kill anyone for refusing
to pay the extortion.
“If the Federal Government is sincere in its fight against corruption.
The should fight this military and police extortion/killings frontally
by removing the checkpoints in the zone and introduce military and
police patrols that will be moving from one place to another on the
roads to provide security. Staying in one place for too long leads to
extortion.
